In the past few days, fibrous asbestos has been discovered & disturbed on the Chandler Highway Bridge construction site (on the riverfront, outside the AMCOR section).
There are reports the contaminated soil isn’t contained, and frankly, it’s been windy.
Local residents, especially those near the bridge construction site are very concerned.

The residents of Alphington have been represented by South Alphington and Fairfield Civic Association (SAFCA), Alphington Paper Mill Action Group (APMAG) and West Alphington Residents Inc (WARI) for many years advocating on a range of issues including the AMCOR site and the Chandler Highway Bridge.
These groups are talking to the council and Vic Roads with a clear and direct message asking what’s going on and what’s being done to contain & fix the serious threat to the local families, residents and children.

Yarra Councillor Danae Bosler has responded to APMAG that she is pressing Bruce Phillips for action. Bruce has spoken to the developers, and Danae has asked him to take it up directly with VicRoads and the contractor who dug up the asbestos.

The Age has been following the story, and the CFMEU also posted an article about it – see the link below
