Yarra Bend site workers have been arriving earlier, and parking further east of the construction site as the site work builds. As a result, residential Alphington construction site parking is tight. As we all return to work and school, the pressure on parking is building, overflowing into local streets.
The AMPAG team has noticed this is leading to a lot more traffic, noise and unsafe parking on intersections, verges and driveways.
Early morning parking hotspots
Construction parking is now extending right along Riverview Grove and down View St, as well as north into Clive and Lowther Streets. Given some workers are arriving at 5:30 for a 7am start, its getting busier, earlier!
School pick up and drop off traffic also flows along View St, and exits along Riverview Grove. This means parking management is going to be an area of interest for months to come. When the new school development construction starts in the forseeable future, a broader view on parking will crop up again we’re sure.
APMAG has contacted the council to make sure normal road safety rules apply (like not parking within 10m of an intersection) and construction machinery start times are adhered to. We’ve also requested that the developers make parking on the construction site available to the site workers sooner.
Council has confirmed ” Construction enforcement officers regularly patrol this area on a daily basis to ensure the start and finish times are being adhered to, as well as other conditions of the Construction Management plan. If any breaches are detected then appropriate enforcement action is taken”
Ongoing, residents in the new area continue to find street parking is very limited, with new residents already finding themselves parking on footpaths and paved verges, even on weekends when construction traffic is low.
The workers also park in Lowther St which is 2 hour parking They get booked and continue to park there
Also turning left and right into Heidelberg Rd from Lowther St
Very difficult to see traffic both ways
Ideal solution is workers to have on site parking
Clive Street is also experiencing high parking volume by site workers.
Thanks for this – I’ve updated the article to reflect your input. Thanks so much!
Tradespeople with large utility vehicles are parking over 2 spaces in View St, with no regard for school traffic needs.
Some arrive at 6.30 am with music blaring from speakers and conversations on car phones. Is there an etiquette protocol for workers on large construction sites?
The early arrivals is a topic we raised with the council, but of course the council can’t prevent people from turning up to work early. We think they’re coming early to get a park, so getting them onsite parking is the best fix, which is what we’re pushing for.
